Snowshoeing is an amazing (if somewhat retro) way to see the wild winter wonderlands, especially if you don’t want any people around (except your own family, of course), plus it’s easier for kids than skiing. Most recreational kits available (and yes, just buy them and keep them in your trunk) come with snowshoes, poles, leg gaiters and a carrying bag. Since they are adjustable for any shoe size, it would make sense to buy them after the first outing or two with rentals (to see if the kids actually like wondering around in the powder).
